Chinese sections. Each programme suite has all facilities to produce a complete programme (with rehearsal channel) and lines for remote pick-up of radio relays and outside broadcasts.

11. Since the re-equipment of the new studios, completed in 1953 after the changeover from the old Gloucester Building studios in 1951, major technical changes have been instituted in order to keep abreast of the rapidly developing tape recording and microgroove reproducing techniques. Marconi Optical Groove Locator Turntables were received and installed during the year.

A design was drawn up for a six-channel reproducing unit with groove locating facilities for production work which is now under construction in the Cable and Wireless Radio Workshop.

New tape recorders were needed to supplement the existing facilities and an order for two new Ferrograph recorders was placed in the United Kingdom during the year. Plans to provide acoustically separate rooms to accommodate the extra recording channel were being prepared.

Transmitters

12. In conjunction with several other stations operating in the area, a frequency change was made to conform to the inter- national plan drawn up at Geneva in 1951. This was effected in May when the English programme (ZBW) changed from 845 to 860 kc/s. The transmission of the Chinese programme (ZEK) continued on 640 kc/s as before. Both these trans- mitters (S.T.C. type CM.2), radiating 2 kilowatts, are at the Hung Hom transmitting station of Cable and Wireless Ltd., and have "T" aerials suspended from 180 ft. towers.

13. Besides the two medium wave transmitters, a Marconi SWB8A, radiating 24 kilowatts on 9.52 mc/s, broadcast selected English and Chinese programmes throughout the day.

The medium wave transmissions however, while ade- quate for the immediate town areas of Kowloon and Victoria, were providing a poor service after nightfall to the increasing
