Both the English and Chinese Radio Services made a conscious effort to increase their involvement in community relations and charity work during the year. In the "Walk For A Million" campaign RTHK encouraged listeners to walk with station personalities on a sponsored basis. As a result the Station raised in excess of $80,000 towards the Community Chest. Ray Cordeiro devoted three nights of his popular show "All The Way With Ray" to raising contributions to the Chest and with the administrative help of Tony Flurscheim a further $8,000 was raised for charity.

CHINESE RADIO SERVICE (Radio - 1 and Radio – 2)

It was a particularly difficult year for the Chinese Service faced with a shortage of money and continual staff changes as a result of the retirement of three senior officers.

Schedules were altered to cater for the changing audience demand with the result that the "Phone-in" element proved more and more popular. Response to certain programmes was so overwhelming it caused disruption to the telephone network in Kowloon Tong near Broadcasting House. Producers were encouraged, however, by the large numbers of people wanting to take an active part in discussing local issues, and to voice reaction to proposals by both Government and private enterprise.

Qualified respondents for the survey were Chinese males and famales over 12 years old living in private residential accommodation. Outdoor workers and factory workers were not included in the sample.

The results showed that of the average daily audience:-

51% listened to RTHK daily.

43% to Commercial Radio.
