Internationally, it was an active year and the newsroom put out many flashes. The most significant ones were on the fall of Saigon and Phnom Penh, the deaths of the Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. CHOU En-lai, and the Spanish Head of State, General Francisco Franco, the coups in Bangladesh, the State of Emergency in India and the dismissal of the Gough Whitlam Government in Australia. The news flashes were usually followed by special background reports.

Chinese Public Affairs: Some five hundred programmes were put out, covering nearly a thousand items, both serious as well as light hearted. New legislation and policies were explained in great detail.

Although it was started several years ago, the programme 'Late Call' continued to be very popular. It aimed at bridging the gap between the Government and the people. It was broadcast live every Friday night, with City District Office representatives, Urban Councillors and spokesmen from various government departments taking part. In the one-hour programme, listeners phoned in with complaints, queries or suggestions for the officials in the studio. The programme enabled Government officials to present a clearer picture of topical or controversial issues. The City District Officers continued to lend their support by doing much of the follow- up work. The programme was seen by the public as an effective outlet for their views or grievances.
