DEPARTMENTAL TRAINING

119. The Training Unit, which is located at 316-320 J. Hotung House, Hankow Road has 3 lecture-cum-conference rooms, a small library and 4 offices for the training staff.

120. The second Senior Officers' Course, attended on a one-day-a- week release basis by 11 Assistant Resettlement Officers promoted on trial, ended in May. This course is designed to provide officers promoted to the Assistant Resettlement Officer grade with a good grounding in their new responsibilities. In October, a third course, run intensively on a half-day release basis for about four months, was attended by 26 officers, 9 of whom were Assistant Resettlement Officers promoted on trial and 17 senior Resettlement Assistants. The fourth course in the series, attended by 25 senior Resettlement Assistants two full days a week, commenced in March.

121. Five 2-year Student Resettlement Assistant courses, attended by 116 trainees, were completed during the year while another four classes attended by 66 trainees on a one-day-a-week release basis were still in progress. Two new classes attended by 47 new recruits com- menced in February and in March. These courses provide a thorough grounding in the duties of the grade and explain the various depart- mental procedures.

WELFARE

122. The departmental Sports and Welfare Association had another active year. A table tennis tournament was held in June and this was followed in July by a departmental miniature football tournament for the Keeling Challenge Cup which was won by the Squatter Control Sub-division team. The Association also arranged launch picnics to Picnic Bay and Clear Water Bay, which were well attended. The departmental miniature football team took part in the tournament for the Aserappa Cup and also played in an exhibition match at the opening of the Shek Lei Playground. Officers of the department also took part in the invitation 400-metre relay races at the annual sports day of the Urban Services Department and the Civil Aid Services.

123. The Morrison Scholarship Fund, named after a former Com- missioner for Resettlement, gave grants of $50 each to fifteen children of minor staff to meet the cost of their school fees.

124. The Barty Welfare Fund, established in 1968 in honour of Mr. D. C. BARTY, C.B.E., the previous Commissioner for Resettlement,
