There are 100 senior non-technical posts and 18 technical posts. in the department which are filled by Administrative and Executive Officers, a Treasury Accountant, a Maintenance Surveyor and an Assist- ant Building Services Engineer (both seconded from the Public Works Department), Senior Resettlement Officers, Resettlement Officers, Assist- ant Resettlement Officers and Electrical Inspectors. Of these 118 posts, eight are at present filled by expatriate officers.

141. The responsibilities of the main departmental grades are briefly as follows:

Senior Resettlement Officers

Officers (salary scale: $3,310-$3,870; Technical, $3,170-$3,590)

In addition to specific dutics, Senior Resettlement Officers are responsible to the heads of their division or sub-division for the overall running of these units, with particular reference to staffing matters.

Resettlement Officers (salary scale: $2,240-$2,870; Technical, $2,240-

$2,765)

In the Estates Division, most Resettlement Officers are responsible for the overall control of groups of estates housing from 76,000 to 163,000 people, with three others being responsible for the factories, cottage areas and sanitation. In the Operations Division, Squatter Control Resettlement Officers are in charge of all sub-divisional activities within their districts, and in the Clearance sub-division the Resettlement Officer is concerned mainly with investigations arising from clearances. Another Resettlement Officer is responsible for all departmental training. In the Works Division, Resettlement Officers (Technical) are in charge of technical matters on domestic estates (grouped geographically), factory estates and cottage and licensed or resite

areas.

Assistant Resettlement Officers (salary scale: $1,160-$2,135; Technical,

$1,685-$2,135)

In the Estates Division, Assistant Resettlement Officers are in charge of the general administration of an estate, factory blocks or groups of cottage areas, and some are assigned to more specialized duties. Their technical counterparts in the Works Division are responsible for the day to day maintenance of estates, factory blocks and cottage areas. In the Operations Division, Assistant Resettlement Officers in Squatter Control are responsible for geographical sections and also for the administration of the rent advance scheme, and in Clearance they head the specialized units within the sub-division. Student Resettlement Assistants/Resettlement Assistants (salary scale: $425-

$515/$737-$1,460; Technical, $900-$1,610)

Officers of this grade, together with their counterparts in the Works Division, (Area Officers (Technical)), carry out the department's field work under the direction of Assistant Resettlement Officers. Their duties include looking after tenancy problems and the cleanliness of a number of domestic blocks, screening for resettlement, and patrolling squatter control areas. Some Resettlement Assistants are also engaged in office rather than field dutics. Electrical Inspectors (salary scale (Class II): $1,685-$2,765)

The main responsibility of the Electrical Inspectors is the maintenance of all electrical wiring in estates, factory blocks and cottage areas, under the overall charge of the Assistant Electrical Engineer.
