42. 28 acres were cleared for land sales, some by private treaty but mainly by auction.
43. 3,721 people were cleared and resettled from land not required for development. These people were mainly fire or natural disaster victims for whom resites were not readily available or were pavement squatters on existing roads. Several factories were also cleared on Hong Kong Island and reprovisioned in the Chai Wan Resettlement Factory. 44. A start has been made on resettling boat squatters from typhoon anchorages in the Colony in order to provide more space for working boats and shelter during tropical storms. As Government has at present no legal power to break up boats, resettlement is only offered to those boat squatters who are willing either to demolish them them- selves or to hand them over to Government for breaking up. 2,001 boat squatters were cleared from the lagoon in Tsuen Wan during the year. These people constituted a floating community complete with their own shops and school. Two floating pigsties were also encountered in the clearance.
45. Altogether 163 clearances of land took place during the year. 57 of these involved land and cultivation and of these 26 did not involve the resettlement of people. The total area of cultivated land cleared during 1961 to 1962 was 66.1024 acres for which ex gratia compensation amounting to $2,380,932.32 was paid.
