after the cultivator has been interviewed at the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs. Crop compensation and any other compensation for private land under the Crown Lands Resumption Ordinance is paid before the land is finally cleared.

(c) Clearance during the Year

37. As has already been mentioned, most of the clearance effort this year has been concentrated on making available new land for resettlement estates. About 15 acres were cleared for Stage III of Tung Tau Resettlement Estate involving the clearance and resettlement of about 14,000 people. Other estate clearances were Stages I and II of Tsz Wan Shan, from which about 1,200 people were cleared to release 120 acres for development and Tin Wan Resettlement Estate, from which most of the squatters were resited nearby so that they can move into the completed buildings in 2 years' time. 17 acres for the first stage of So Mo Ping and 11 acres in Yau Tong were similarly cleared.

38. Expansion of the low cost housing programme to provide accommodation for 20,000 people a year has meant a large increase in the acreage cleared for this purpose. 66 acres were cleared of 16,500 squatters for the following low cost housing projects:

Wong Tai Sin Area 'C',

Kwun Tong,

Ngau Tau Kok,

Valley Road,

Shek Kip Mei,

Cheung Sha Wan,

Shau Kei Wan Housing Society and

Hau Pui Loong Road Housing Society Estates.

54 acres were also cleared of 535 people for other housing schemes.

39. Nearly 18 acres were cleared to provide sites for ten new schools as well as an extension to the Police Training School at Aberdeen.

40. The main clearance for road works was that in respect of the Castle Peak Road through Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan, and further clearances are planned to widen the very congested stretch of road between Tsuen Wan and the Lai Chi Kok peninsula. Altogether, nearly 27 acres were cleared to provide for road widening and various drainage schemes.

41. Most of the Roman Catholic Hospital site has been cleared at So Uk and work has already started on the Jockey Club Clinic at Shau Kei Wan, the site for which has also been cleared during the year. Over 15 acres were cleared for public buildings this year.
