Statistics

112. Part I of Table XXI gives statistics of applications, registrations, renewals, cancellations, removals and restorations, for the ten years 1961-62 to 1970-71, and Part II gives statistics of miscellaneous other work done during the year with the corresponding figures for the previous year. It will be seen from Part I of this Table that there have been increases in the numbers of renewals and removals, the former having risen from 1,116 to 1,292 and the latter from 478 to 499.

Fees

113. Mainly as a result of the increase in the number of marks reg- istered and the number of renewals effected during the year, the fees collected rose by $41,568 over the 1969-70 figures to the new record total of $546,427. Particulars of fees collected are given in Table XXII.

PATENTS REGISTRY

114. There is no original registration of patents in Hong Kong, but patents granted in the United Kingdom may be registered under the Registration of United Kingdom Patents Ordinance. This provides that the grantee of a patent in the United Kingdom, or any person deriving his right from the grantee may, within five years from the date of issue of the patent, apply to have it registered here, and that such registration shall confer the same rights as though the patent had been issued in the United Kingdom with an extension to Hong Kong. Applications must be accompanied by a certified copy of the United Kingdom specification and a certificate from the Comptroller General of the United Kingdom Patent Office giving full particulars of the issue of the patent.

115. The number of patents registered during the year dropped by 149 from last year's record total to 391. The numbers registered during the past six years have been as follows:
