Miscellaneous

202. An Industrial Dsign and Trade Mark Research Mission from Japan, comprising five members, visited the Department on 23rd February 1970 and discussed in general terms questions dealing with the administration of the Trade Marks Ordinance, the law relating to the registration of patents in Hong Kong and also the law relating to registered designs. The Mission also paid a visit to the Trade Marks Registry, where the Registry procedures were explained to them.

Staff

203. Mr. N. M. GLEESON, formerly Senior Solicitor, was appointed Assistant Registrar General on 1st April 1969, and on the same date, Mr. J. L. G. MCLEAN, formerly Solicitor, was appointed Senior Solicitor. On 6th April 1969, Mr. I. A. REID, Senior Solicitor, departed for the United Kingdom on completion of his contract. Mr. J. A. H. TILLEY, Assistant Registrar General, acted as Registrar General during the absence of Mr. W. HUME on leave from 1st to 14th September 1969.

204. The Department commenced the year three short of its approved establishment of fifteen Solicitors/Assistant Solicitors. On 10th April 1969 Mr. P. C. DowsON, Solicitor, joined the Department, which at the end of the year was still two short of its establishment.

205. The Departmental Secretary, Mr. W. J. BARRY, was trans- ferred to Colonial Secretariat as Government Security Officer on 2nd June 1969 and was replaced by Mr. D. J. MoosA on transfer from the Fire Services Department.

Photographic Section

206. The Department has a Photographic Section equipped with a Photostat machine Model 4 Type P, capable of copying plans, docu- ments, registers, etc. up to four feet by three feet in size, a Verifax copier capable of taking up to six foolscap copies from one matrix, and a Rank Xerox 914 Copier for copying documents, etc. up to 9 inches by 14 inches. Requests for copies of documents increased very substantially, and during the year 9,273 photostat, 1,766 Verifax and
