Births Registered

151. The number of births registered in 1965 was 102,195, com- prising 100,690 Chinese (51,794 male and 48,896 female), and 1,505 non-Chinese (793 male and 712 female). Table XXX gives (a) the num- bers of births registered during the years 1956 to 1965 by sex and race with the percentages of males and females, and of Chinese and non- Chinese, and (b) the live birth rates per thousand of population for the same years. The total number of births registered in 1965 decreased by 6,324 as against 108,519 in 1964. As compared with 1964 the year's birth rate of 27.0 per thousand of population was down 2.4. Births for the preceding 11 years followed this pattern except in 1958 and 1959, when the positions in the first two quarters were reversed, possibly due to changes in the registration pro- cedure. In 1965 there was again a deviation from the normal pattern, the positions of the first and third quarters being reversed.

153. Table XXXI gives the births registered in 1963, 1964 and 1965 by districts. This shows that in 1965 the numbers registered on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon and New Kowloon dropped by 3,458 and 2,883 respectively, and in the New Territories increased by 17. When these figures are converted into percentages of the 1964 births, it is noted that the drop on Hong Kong Island was 12.08% whereas the
