for most of the year eight legal officers short of its establishment. However, by the end of the year four new Legal Assistants had joined the Depart- ment: Mr. N. M. GLEESON, an Irish Solicitor, having joined at the begin- ning of the year, and the three others, Messrs. S. D. OATES, an English Solicitor, H. M. REDDIN, an English and Canadian Barrister-at-law and Canadian Solicitor, and P. MURPHY, a Scottish Solicitor, in the last two months of the year. On the other hand, on 1st March 1964 the Department lost the valuable services of Mr. C. M. STEVENS, Senior Legal Assistant, Acting Assistant Registrar General, who after nearly nine years' service with the Department in the course of which he had acted as Deputy Registrar General on six occasions, was transferred to the Judiciary on well-deserved promotion to the post of Registrar of the Supreme Court.

188. The Registrar General, Mr. W. K. THOMSON, was on vacation leave from 24th June to 30th September 1963, during which time Mr. R. H. MUNRO acted as Registrar General, Mr. C. M. STEVENS as Deputy Registrar General, Mr. J. A. H. TILLEY as Assistant Registrar General, and Mr. E. G. SOUSAɛ as Senior Legal Assistant. Mr. SOUSAE continued to act as Senior Legal Assistant for the rest of the year. Mr. W. Hume was promoted Senior Legal Assistant as from 1st April 1963, and on the transfer of Mr. STEVENS to the Judiciary on 1st March 1964 Mr. TILLEY was appointed Acting Assistant Registrar General, and Mr. I. A. REID Acting Senior Legal Assistant.

189. Mr. S. S. TAN was appointed Acting Senior Assistant Registrar as from 16th December 1963 on Mr. S. A. FOWLER's proceeding on retirement leave as mentioned in the following paragraph. Mr. Richard KWAN was promoted Assistant Registrar, Class I, as from 2nd October 1963, and Messrs. J. C. KOH and James Szɛ Acting Assistant Registrars, Class I, as from 2nd September 1963 and 30th January 1964 respectively.

190. Three senior members of the Department's staff retired during the year, and were presented with retirement gifts from their colleagues. Mr. G. L. HERDMAN, who had been Deputy Registrar of Marriages since 10th November 1947 and had married upwards of 30,000 couples, retired on 2nd October 1963. Mr. S. A. FOWLER, who had joined the Government service in 1932 and had latterly been over eleven years in the Land Office, left the Colony on retirement leave on 7th December 1963. He had been Senior Assistant Registrar in charge of the Land Office since 1st July 1959. Lastly, Mr. CHAN Choi, 'Uncle Chan' to his colleagues, shroff in the Births and Deaths Registry, retired on 26th
