Law Reform Committee
79. The Registrar General continued during the year to serve as a member of the Law Reform Committee set up to examine and consider legislation enacted in the United Kingdom and to make recommenda- tions, in the light of local circumstances, for the reform of the laws of the Colony.
Revenue
80. Table XXII shows the total revenue of the Department for 1958/59, amounting to $1,859,082.90 as against a total expenditure of $1,276,805.78. These figures exceed the previous year's by some $164,000 and $141,000 respectively.
Photostat Machine
81. The photostat copying machine which was installed at the beginning of 1957 was kept busy during the year. A total of 4,362 photostat copies were produced, 3,212 (about 74%) being produced for members of the public on payment, the remaining 1,150 (about 26%) being for other Government departments. The photostat copies supplied to the public were of records kept by the various branches of the Department, and the fees received totalled $11,305. These fees are in- cluded in the figures for the fees of the branches supplying the copies.
Personnel
82. Mr. W. Aneurin Jones, who had been Registrar General since the Department was established on 1st April, 1949, proceeded on retire- ment leave on 27th June, 1958, prior to taking up an appointment as Commissioner for the Revision of the Laws of Kenya. Mr. W. K. Thomson, Deputy Registrar General, acted as Registrar General with effect from the same date, and was subsequently promoted to the sub- stantive post as from 1st August, 1958. Mr. C. M. Stevens, Legal Assistant, returned to the Colony from leave on 26th October, 1958, and was appointed to act as Deputy Registrar General from that date. 83. Mr. TAN Sze Sui, Assistant Registrar Class I, had the honour to be selected for one of the two Hong Kong places in the Overseas
