11:52 The Division is responsible for the preparation of outline proposals for new water supply schemes to proposed developments throughout the territory, as well as for revision of requirements to meet growth of demand in existing, developing or redeveloping areas. Although there was slight improvement in the staff position during the year, there was still a considerable backlog in the planning programme.
Planning Work
11.53 Planning data were updated and converted to metric units in conjunction with the metrication programme of the Department.
11.54 The water supply system in Stanley and Repulse Bay area was examined in detail. The first stage of the proposed improvement work included the extensions to Red Hill Filters and Stanley Mound Pumping Station.
11.55 Planning studies were completed in respect of the new water supply system to be implemented for supplying the planned developments in Ap Lei Chau as well as future development in the Pok Fu Lam area.
11.56 In Kowloon, the proposal for salt water supply for flushing purposes in Mong Kok/Yau Ma Tei area was re-examined with a view to extending the system to cover Tsim Sha Tsui area.
11.57 In conjunction with the road works programme, the requirement for a second trunk main in Lion Rock Tunnel Road was examined with a view to catering for future developments in Sha Tin New Town. As a result, the timing of the laying of this trunk main was advanced.
11.58 Planning for a high level supply system to anticipate demand in the area above Fo Tan Valley in Sha Tin New Town was completed.
11.59 An improvement scheme was planned to meet proposed residential developments along Ting Kok Road in Tai Po, which would overtax the existing water supply arrangements.
11.60 Extension of water supply to the Fei Ngo Shan/Razor Hill area was planned, and proposals for improving the Sai Kung supply system were investigated.
11.61 Detailed investigations were carried out with a view to abstracting maximum quantities from the River Indus Catchment and the proposed River Ganges Catchment. In addition, studies were carried out on means of receiving possible increased quantities of water from the East River.
