KOWLOON DIVISION
Road Works
9.21 Good progress was achieved in the contract for Wai Yip Street Extension, which was completed ahead of schedule in June 1976 and opened to traffic in the same month. This provides a useful diversion route for traffic to and from Lai Tin, Yau Tong and Lei Yue Mun areas during the construction of the Mass Transit Railway in Kwun Tong Road. Work continued during the year on the western section of the elevated road from Gascoigne Road to Tong Mi Road. When completed in late 1977, this, together with the already completed eastern section, will form a major link between east Kowloon and Tong Mi Road, a primary distributor road on the western side of Kowloon.
9.22 Good progress was also maintained on the Salisbury Road Extension which will relieve traffic conditions in Chatham Road and give access to the East Tsim Sha Tsui Development Area. The westbound carriageway in this contract was completed and opened to traffic in December 1976 and enabled traffic going to south Tsim Sha Tsui to bypass Chatham Road.
9.23 In September 1976 another contract commenced at the northern end of Hong Chong Road to provide a turning facility which will allow traffic coming out of the Cross Harbour Tunnel to use Salisbury Road Extension instead of Chatham Road to go to the Tsim Sha Tsui area. On Kowloon Bay reclamation in Kwun Tong, work is well advanced on the Airport Tunnel Road which will provide the connection between the Airport Tunnel under Kai Tak to Wai Yip Street in Kwun Tong.
9.24 At the same time as the construction of new roads, improvements were made to many existing roads. The reconstruction of a section of Ching Cheung Road, which was commenced last year, was completed in August, while the reconstruction of Lung Cheung Road continued and was nearing completion at the year's end. Several major road improvement contracts were let during the year, including Canton Road
