9.10

The three Works Divisions, regionally located on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories, are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of public roads and associated sewerage and drainage systems.

9.11

During the year, 45 projects with a total value of $89.67 million were completed by the three Works Divisions and a further 90 projects with a total value of $607.43 million were in hand. Details of the projects completed and in hand are given in Appendices X & Y while statistics relating to roads and drains are shown in Appendix AA.

Maintenance

9.12

A substantial part of the staff effort was devoted to the maintenance and improvement of the existing road network. During the year, $44.26 million was spent on maintenance (excluding the cost of electricity for street lighting) and repair of rainstorm damage and $12.18 million on road improvements. Some 8.9 km of road were reconstructed and 39.0 km resurfaced.

Utility Co-ordination

Close liaison was maintained with the utility companies, the Police and other Government Departments on the
