The exceptionally heavy rain in late August 1976 caused several serious landslides. The Electrical and Mechanical Office, in co-operation with The Gurkha Engineers, the Royal Air Force and the Highways Office, had considerable involvement with the Holy Cross landslide site. The main problem was difficulty of access to the site and the Office was mainly responsible for stripping down an engine-driven compressor to a weight suitable for air lifting by helicopter and its subsequent reassembly. A representative of the Office also undertook the task, in co-operation with the R.H.K.P.F., of keeping the representatives of the people living beneath the landslide informed of Government efforts and concern for their safety.
