A total of 368 tests was carried out, of which 317 were completed for E. & M. Office and 51 for other Departments.

8.60 The establishment of this Office at the end of the review year was 4,920. Restrictions on recruitment during the first half of the year under review were mainly responsible for the strength being only 4,602. Funds were provided for the purpose of engaging a small amount of casual labour as and when required.

8.61

Recruitment of professional grades was limited, only two Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and two Assistant Electrical and Mechanical Engineers being recruited locally. It was not possible to maintain professional grades at their full establishment.

8.62 During the year 57 staff members of various grades retired, 24 of whom had served in Government for more than 20 years. A further 198 vacancies were caused by death, resignation and transfers to other Departments.

Training

8.63 A total of 803 professional and technical officers attended a wide range of courses, covering various subjects, conducted locally by the Government Training Division, the Labour Department and other educational or institutional centres. One local officer, an Electrical/Mechanical/Air-Conditioning Inspector I was selected for a merit trip to the U.K.

Twenty-six graduates from the Engineering Faculty of the Hong Kong University, together with 23 Polytechnic students, spent 3 months summer vacation in the Vehicle Workshops undertaking practical training.
