Projects under Design and Construction

At the end of the year design and construction work was in progress on 84 projects of an estimated cost of $300 million; this estimate does not include 11 projects the basic design of which was not completed by the end of the period under review. Actual construction work, either by contract or direct labour of the Workshops or a combination of both, was in hand on 30 projects the estimated value of which is $149 million. Among the largest of the projects under construction were the installation of mail handling equipment at the new General Post Office, a sewage treatment plant at Sha Tin New Town, mechanisation and improvements to Kennedy Town and Cheung Sha Wan Abattoirs, the commissioning of Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'B' and a fifth line at Kennedy Town Incineration Plant. At the Hong Kong International Airport work continued on the supply and installation of an improved High Voltage supply system at the runway, apron and terminal building areas and work was in progress on the installation of conveyorised Customs benches, arrival and departure baggage handling systems and passenger boarding bridges for Bay 5. Contracts were awarded for the supply and installation of the high voltage ring main system, medium voltage distribution system and tunnel lighting and ventilation systems for the second Lion Rock Tunnel and the supply and installation of lifts and ramps for the new ferry pier at Sham Shui Po.

There are now 11,390 lifts and 234 escalators in use in Hong Kong.

A total of 12,543 certificates in respect of examinations and tests of safety equipment was issued and 32 investigations made into lift accidents, unregistered lifts and complaints by the public.
