They all join the service initially at Rank III level. Surveying Assistants (Land and Engineering) attend a comprehensive course in land survey for 9 months, while those of the Estate stream attend a shorter course. Thereafter, the Surveying Assistants (Engineering) are attached to various functional survey sections for field and practical experience for a period of 6 months before being posted to one of the engineering offices for further in-service training. Surveying Assistants (Land and Estate) do the whole of their in-service training in Crown Lands & Survey Office. After 3 years of service, Surveying Assistants of the three streams sit for a promotion examination and, subject to passing this and satisfactory service, are promoted to Rank II at the end of the fourth year of service.

7.72 Officers recruited in the Surveying Assistant grades, although not pupils, may, subject to holding the necessary academic qualifications, take professional examinations. In the 1975 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors examinations, five Surveying Assistants (Estate) passed the Part I examination, and eight Student Estate Surveyors and two Surveying Assistants (Estate), passed the Part II examination.

7.73 During the year, 1 Basic Survey Training course was conducted. A total of seven Surveying Assistants (Engineering) and five Surveying Assistants (Land) attended. One Basic Cartographic Training course was also conducted for 11 Cartographic Assistants from this Office and 14 Cartographic Assistants from the New Territories Administration. In addition, one elementary Survey Training Course was conducted for seven Surveying Assistants (Estate) and eight Surveying Assistants (Planning) from the Town Planning Office. All Surveying and Cartographic Assistants Rank III are required to pass a departmental promotion examination before gaining promotion to Rank II. Year results were as follows:-
