One Acting Government Engineer attended the Third Regional Seminar on Environmental Pollution and Solid Wastes Management sponsored by the World Health Organisation, held in Manila in February 1976.

One Engineer from the Drainage Works Division returned from a 1-year M.Sc. Course in Environmental Pollution Control at the University of Leeds in October 1975. During his stay in the U.K., he attended the Annual Conference of the Institute of Water Pollution Control held in September 1975.

Seventeen engineering graduates from the University of Hong Kong were employed as Civil Engineering Graduates in the Department under agreement for a three-year training in accordance with the regulations of the Institution of Civil Engineers; nineteen entered their second year and eighteen entered their final year.
Their training in various offices was co-ordinated by the Technical Secretary of the Civil Engineering Office.

Thirty-five Foremen were recruited in two intakes during the year and they attended a 6-month full-time development training course conducted by the Technical Training Unit, to be followed by 18-month in-service field training and supplemented by 4-year part-time day-release courses specially organised by the Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Four students from the University of Hong Kong and twenty-seven students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic received summer training.
The Technical Secretary, Civil Engineering Office, co-ordinated their training in various Divisions.
Welfare

The Staff Welfare Officer continued to provide a wide range of services which included assistance offered to staff on application for loans, legal aid, places in schools, low cost housing and public assistance. A total of 98 cases was dealt with during the year. Visits were also made to staff in hospitals or at home on prolonged sick leave.

Joint Staff Discussion Groups on a Divisional basis continued to hold regular meetings with a view to maintaining and promoting mutual understanding and co-operation among all the staff of the Office.

Outings to Lantau Island for staff of the Office and their families were arranged and over 1,000 persons took part.

Members of the staff participated in all Departmental sports events throughout the year.
For a third time the Office won the volley-ball championship. The Office team also came first in the darts competition. In the 8th P.W.D. Sports Day, staff of the Office won the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4 by 100m relay races. The 7-a-side mini-football league for the Stead Challenge Trophy was held as a joint function with the Highways Office with six Divisions of the Office taking part.
