instrumentation equipment other than that associated with the Plover Cove and High Island Water Schemes and the Lok On Pai Desalter.

11.72 Assembly, repair and testing of general electrical and instrumentation equipment is undertaken in workshops located in the Hong Kong and Kowloon Waterworks Depots. Specialist workshops are maintained in Sha Tin Treatment Works for the repair, calibration and testing of electronic instrumentation equipment, and in Kowloon Depot for the repair, calibration and testing of electrical metering and protective equipment. Details of routine works carried out by the Division are given in Appendix CC.

Maintenance

11.73 During the year the Chief Electrical Engineer visited various manufacturers, users and repairers of high voltage motors in U.K. to discuss problems experienced with high voltage insulation with a view to improving existing facilities by providing a specialist workshop to handle medium and high voltage motor insulation repairs.

11.74 The Division maintains electrical and instrumentation plant installed in 63 pumping stations, 14 treatment works and 60 minor installations. Due to a shortage of instrumentation personnel, maintenance of instrumentation equipment has been limited to urgent repairs, with the exception of essential plant such as the chlorine bulk storage plant at Sha Tin Treatment Works. The installed kilowatt rating of electric motors increased from 67,340 to 96,866 of which 51,560 operates at high voltages of 3,300, 6,600 and 11,000.

11.75 Work on four high voltage motors windings carried over from the previous year was completed, two by divisional staff and two by overseas contractors, and the motors returned to service. Major re-insulation work on two high voltage motors and repairs to 22 medium voltage motors - of which 21 were small motors below 50 H.P. were undertaken by divisional staff.

11.76 A series of faults on a number of current transformers installed on the high voltage switchboard at Pui O Pumping Station revealed the need to rewind all 39 transformers. This work and the recommissioning of the units was carried out by divisional staff.

11.77 An eight-panel high-voltage switchboard, complete with protective and auxiliary equipment, was constructed from redundant components for use in emergency or temporary works. This was undertaken as a training exercise for apprentices under the guidance of senior staff.

11.78 Control cables damaged at five locations by contractors engaged on construction work were repaired and recommissioned; four control cables were diverted to suit construction projects.
