11.63 A surge problem that had persisted in the washwater system at Silvermine Bay Treatment Works was successfully suppressed by adjusting the valve closure rate.
11.64 Fatigue cracks were found on the crankshafts of diesel engines at Cheung Sha Wan Salt Water Pumping Station and Sau Mau Ping Salt Water Pumping Station. Statistics indicate that the crankshafts of a particular type of diesel engine (which had hitherto been well known for long life and reliability) now have a life span of 15 years only after continuous operation. Replacement crankshafts were received and fitted to both engines.
11.65 The Division now operates 64 pumping stations which together house 233 pumpsets. The total installed power of major pumping plant throughout the territory, both diesel and electric, increased by 1.5% to 80,752 kilowatt.
New Works
11.66 New plant of 9,092 cubic metres per day capacity at Chai Wan Salt Water Pumping Station was installed and handed over for operation and maintenance. In the same area another new pumping station, Chai Wan North (Fresh Water) Pumping Station, was completed.
11.67 A forced ventilation system was installed at Pui O Pumping Station as there was evidence that excessive ambient temperatures coupled with high humidity were affecting the reliability of electrical plant and equipment.
11.68 To coincide with the uprating of the Tai Po Tau Treatment Works, a 27,276 cubic metres per day electric motor driven pumpset was installed at the Tai Po Tau Pumping Station.
11.69 Delays were experienced on most projects as a result of staff shortage and the late delivery of plant from manufacturers in the U.K.
11.70 Procurements of new plant continued for five existing and two new pumping stations and design work on seven new stations was in progress. During the year, work was carried out on a total of 31 projects.
