1.08 On Hong Kong Island, the widening and re-alignment of Queensway, the widening of Pokfulam Road through Pokfulam Village, the widening of Shek Pai Wan Road, the construction of the bus terminus and access road for the Oceanarium at Aberdeen and the drilling of the pilot tunnel along the alignment of the proposed Aberdeen Tunnel are the major projects completed during the year. The widening of Pokfulam Road from Mount Davis Road to Queen Mary Hospital and the first stage of roads and drainage works in the Urban Renewal Pilot Scheme area were started and progressed satisfactorily.
1.09 In Kowloon, traffic congestion was considerably relieved by the opening of several elevated roads and interchanges. These included the elevated road from Prince Edward Road over Nathan Road to Lai Chi Kok Road, Kowloon Park Drive, the Waterloo Road and Argyle Street Interchanges, and the Choi Hung, Po Kong Stage I, Fung Mo, Nam Cheong and Tai Woh Ping Interchanges along the Kowloon foothills road linking Kwun Tong with Kwai Chung. Good progress was achieved for the foundation work on the Western Section of the elevated road from Gascoigne Road to Tong Mi Road, Salisbury Road Extension, the Airport Tunnel Road from Kowloon Bay reclamation to Kwun Tong, the extension of Wai Yip Street and the construction of a flyover over Kwun Tong Road.
1.10 In the New Territories, works on the construction of a new railway bridge and the re-alignment of Tai Po Road at M.S. 17 and the duplication of the existing Sha Tin bridge over Shing Mun River were started. The first stage of Tuen Mun Road, which will provide a fast 15.3 km link between the two developing new towns at Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun, was nearly half completed.
1.11 The total number of vehicles registered again decreased during the year, by 1.7%. Traffic congestion and shortage of parking spaces continued to be a problem. Traffic management techniques continued to be applied to make the best use of the existing road network, especially during the construction of the Mass Transit Railway.
1.12 Site formation and reclamation work carried out on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories provided a total of 44.5 hectares of land. Stage I of the reclamation at Area D, Aldrich Bay, and the construction of a further stage of Chai Wan Seawall were completed. Good progress was maintained at Central Reclamation Stage V and Chai Wan Reclamation on Hong Kong Island. Site formation work for Stage I of the Tai Po Industrial Estate commenced.
1.13 Pollution control and environmental protection projects continued. Construction of the refuse incinerator at Kwai Chung commenced and tenders were invited for the construction of an interim Sewage Treatment Plant at Sha Tin New Town. Three other solid wastes disposal plants were approved during the year and were in various stages of investigation and design by Consulting Engineers.
