9.10 The three Works Divisions, regionally located on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories, are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of public roads and associated sewerage and drainage systems.

9.11 During the year, 55 projects with a total value of $62.53 million were completed. A further 89 projects with a total value of $475.42 million were in hand. Some of these projects are described in paragraphs 9.18 to 9.31.

## Maintenance

9.12 A substantial part of the staff effort was devoted to the maintenance and improvement of the existing road network. During the year $59.06 million was spent on maintenance and repair of rainstorm damage and $12.93 million on road improvements. Some 9.17 km of road were reconstructed and 43.68 km resurfaced.

## Utility Co-ordination

9.13 Close liaison was maintained with the utility companies, the Police and other Government Departments on the co-ordination of trench works in public carriageways. Monthly meetings were held with representatives of the above bodies to plan and phase such works so as to minimise obstruction to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Stricter control of road openings was exercised by staff of this office with assistance from the Police. Staff also attended the Mass Transit Railway Utility Co-ordinating Group monthly meetings to discuss the diversion of utility services necessitated by Mass Transit Railway works.
