Late in the afternoon of Saturday 3rd May 1975 the Commissioner of the Essential Services Corps placed the Office on alert in anticipation of arrival, next day, of some 4,000 Vietnamese refugees. The immediate known requirements affecting the Office were in respect of Pool Transport and the test of bringing Princess Margaret Hospital, the scheduled reception centre for the refugees, from a "care and maintenance" state to full operational readiness within 24 hours. This latter task was a tremendous undertaking but was satisfactorily achieved due to the outstanding co-operation of all staff.

This urgent work also had to be completed in line with a tight time schedule. Most of the electrical work, including additional requests as they arose, was completed within a few days but the demand for Pool Transport continued into the next week. In all some 2,200 vehicle trips were made by Pool Transport during the whole operation.
