8.55 During the year 104 of the 108 Craft Apprentices were employed as artisans and 23 of the 24 Technical Apprentices were employed as Foremen/Technicians. The other five Apprentices left Government service and obtained employment in the private sector.
8.56 With the completion of the new practice workshop building at Caroline Hill towards the end of 1975 the whole Apprentice Training Centre was able to move in from the former Whitfield Barracks site. The building has a total usable area of approximately 11,200 sq. ft. with three lecture rooms and five practice workshops with greatly improved facilities.

8.57 The establishment of the Office at the end of the review year was 4,689. However, due to restrictions on recruitment and filling of posts the actual strength was 4,500. Funds were provided for the purpose of engaging a small amount of casual labour as and when required.
8.58 Recruitment of professional grades was limited, only three Assistant Electrical and Mechanical Engineers being recruited locally. It was not possible to maintain professional grades at their full establishment.
8.59 During the year 49 staff members of various grades retired. Of these, 24 had served in Government for more than 20 years. A further 177 vacancies were caused by death, resignation and transfers to other departments.
Training
8.60 A total of 595 professional and technical officers attended a wide range of courses covering various subjects and which were conducted locally by the Government Training Division, the Labour Department and other educational or institutional centres. One local officer, an Electrical/Mechanical/Air-Conditioning Inspector I was selected for a merit trip to the U.K.
8.61 Eleven graduates from the Engineering Faculty of Hong Kong University, together with 10 Polytechnic students, spent 3 months summer vacation in the Vehicle Workshops undertaking practical training.
Sports and Recreation
8.62 The Office Staff Club was very active throughout the year, its membership totalling 1,794. A full programme of social and sporting activities was well supported. Very good results were achieved in the annual P.W.D. swimming and athletic competitions.
