GENERAL
8.01 This Office continued to be responsible for the electrical and mechanical engineering of Government projects, with the exception of those of the Water Supplies Department. A service was provided to other Government Departments and Offices of the Public Works Department, the Office acting as consultants and contractors on electrical and mechanical matters, including the maintenance of most of the electro-mechanical equipment used by Government and the whole of its fleet of 3,853 vehicles.
8.02 Initial re-organisation of the Workshops has enabled an increased work load to be carried out with a 5% decrease in staff (mentioned in the last Annual Report). Further benefits are expected when the re-organisation is completed; due, however, to financial restrictions implementation has been delayed.
8.03 Financial restrictions have also necessitated extending the life of some equipment; this has led to a considerable amount of additional work and the Workshops are fully committed. Much effort has also been expended in the reconditioning and manufacturing of spare parts as a means of reducing expenditure.
8.04 The Office was represented on various committees including:-
