The Division is responsible for the investigation, planning, design and construction of major stormwater drains, sewers and sewage disposal system in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. The Division is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of sewage plants, and the implementation of a monitoring programme for harbour waters.
Construction
6.32
Major works carried out during the year on Hong Kong Island include the construction of main stormwater drains and sewers in Chai Wan Road extension, intercepting sewers in Aberdeen, drainage improvement works in village areas in Shau Kei Wan and in Sandy Bay, and a submarine sewage outfall for Wan Chai. In Kowloon, reconstruction of a main stormwater drain in Sha Tin Pass Road was in progress. In the New Territories, major works included the construction of a temporary sewage treatment works for Sha Tin New Town and drainage work for On Lok Tsuen.
Planning and Design

New designs undertaken included Aberdeen submarine outfall, extension of stormwater drains on reclamations in Central, Kennedy Town and Chai Wan, Hong Kong, construction of sewers in Cheung Wah Street and stormwater drain extensions in Tong Mi Road reclamation, Kowloon. Planning was carried out for sewage disposal in Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Ma Hang, Hong Kong. Kowloon, a sewage pumping station in Hung Hom and a sewage screening plant in Kwun Tong were also planned. Planning for the diversion of existing stormwater drains and sewers, where necessary, along the route of the initial system of the Mass Transit Railway was in progress.
Studies and Investigation

The bottom drifter study in connection with the Hydrological Survey of Victoria and Tolo Harbours was completed.
6.35
A manual of drainage to be included in the Civil Engineering Manual was under preparation.
6.36
Investigations continued for the assessment of spare capacity of sewer systems in Hong Kong, Kowloon and major centres in the New Territories.
6.37
Monitoring of the quality of Harbour waters and bottom sediments and of bacteriological quality of a number of beaches in the territory continued. A long-term programme plan for sewage treatment and disposal for Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories was under preparation.
