GENERAL
The Waterworks Office is responsible for all aspects of water supply and distribution carried out by Government. The work is divided among eight divisions and four units each with specific responsibilities as shown on the operation and organisation chart. Consulting engineers are appointed to carry out planning feasibility studies and construction of new works which require specialist knowledge or at times when the resources of the Office are fully extended. A list of projects undertaken by consultants is given at Appendix BB. New works and a large proportion of the maintenance work are carried out by contract but the operation of supply, the distribution of water and maintenance of meters and machinery is done by Waterworks staff.
11.02 A 24-hour supply was maintained until the 25th September when supply was restricted to 16 hours a day. Further restrictions to 10 hours a day were imposed on the 9th October and continued until the 17th October when restrictions were lifted and the 24-hour supply resumed.
11.03 Work on the 40 million gallons per day single purpose desalting plant continued but with some delay arising partly from the world wide energy crisis. Water was produced from the first of the six evaporator units on the 12th March. The 60,000 million gallons capacity High Island reservoir and associated tunnels progressed satisfactorily, although construction of the east sea dam was delayed due to cofferdam seepage.
