The Kennedy Town Abattoir Plant continued to operate satisfactorily throughout the year. A weighbridge for the weighing of cattle prior to slaughter was installed in November and the refrigeration services were overhauled by plant staff during the last quarter. In addition to planned maintenance, 326 mechanical, 117 electrical and 62 refrigeration repairs were effected.

Cheung Sha Wan Abattoir was shut down for a short period during the year to enable repairs to be carried out to the cremator refractory brickwork. The refrigeration services were also shut down for a short period for repairs to a brine pipe. Otherwise the plant continued to operate smoothly. In addition to planned maintenance, 1,603 mechanical, 768 electrical and 55 refrigeration repairs were carried out.

Compost was not produced from the Lai Chi Kok Plant during the year, it being shut down pending a review of its future use.
Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Plant Sections

This Section maintains all air-conditioning plant including associated water pumps, together with chlorination equipment and refrigeration plant. At the end of the quarter, 182 air-conditioning and refrigeration plants, both attended and automatic, totalling 9,623.25 tons of refrigeration, were in operation. A further 191 air-conditioning and refrigeration plants totalling 7,966.68 tons of refrigeration, 260 chilled water pumps totalling 5,432 horse power and 18 sets of chlorination equipment totalling 42 lb. per hour were jointly maintained by this and other Sections. In addition, 12 air-conditioning and refrigeration plants totalling 220.20 tons of refrigeration, which are installed on outlying islands, were maintained on behalf of this Section by the Electrical, Refrigeration and Room Cooler Section, Workshops and Maintenance Sub-Division, Hong Kong.
City Hall

The City Hall Electrical and Mechanical Services Section maintains all the electrical, mechanical and air-conditioning installations at the Hong Kong City Hall, carrying out the repairs of faults, replacement of lamps of all types, installation of temporary wiring for flood and display lighting and operates the 700 TR air-conditioning plant as well as 21 zone cabinets. Improvements were made to 17 illumination and communication systems, display lights were installed for 14 exhibitions, operators were provided on 90 occasions for the conversion of the Concert Hall Stage layout and electrical supply provided for illuminated signs and equipment on 18 occasions.

The Airport Electrical and Mechanical Services Section maintains all the electrical, mechanical and air-conditioning systems as well as the runway and landing approach lights, substation equipment, air navigation beacons, baggage conveyor systems and passenger aerobridges at the airport.
