PLANT OPERATION SUB-DIVISION

Incineration Plants, Abattoirs and Compost Plant

8.36

On the completion of the major overhaul in April 1973 three units of the Kennedy Town Incineration Plant operated continuously throughout the year. Three primary cell units of the dust collection plant were renewed by plant staff. Civil engineering work in respect of the extension to the plant by the addition of a fifth line necessitated the removal of the western crane bay, and the maintenance on this crane had to be carried out with the crane situated over No. 1 unit. It was therefore impractical to run No. 1 unit at that time.

In addition to routine maintenance, 879 mechanical and 378 electrical repairs were effected.

8.37

Apart from two short shut-downs, the Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'A' was in continuous operation during the year. The first shut-down, amounting to four days, was to enable water connections to be made for the new 'B' plant and the second, amounting to nine days, was to enable repairs to be carried out to the submerged ash conveyor. During this latter shut-down tubes were renewed in the turbo-alternator condenser. Two primary cell units of the dust collection plant were renewed. Oil burners, manufactured by plant staff, were installed in the rotary kiln inlets on the third and fourth Lines to assist in kiln-burning. Submerged riddlings conveyors were also constructed and found to be of assistance in the dust-free removal of riddlings and prevention of the choking of undergrate hoppers.
