GENERAL

5.01. The Buildings Ordinance Office is responsible on behalf of the Building Authority (the Director of Public Works) for the administration of the Buildings Ordinance, including the control of all private building and street works, and action in respect of dangerous or potentially dangerous buildings and unauthorized alterations to and changes of use in existing buildings. The Office is responsible also for the examination and registration of authorized architects, and for the registration of building, lift and escalator contractors. Additionally, the Office is responsible for the administration of the Demolished Buildings (Redevelopment of Sites) Ordinance and certain aspects of the Education Ordinance, the Airport (Control of Obstructions) Ordinance, and the Places of Public Entertainment Regulations.

5.02. Matters of policy, overall co-ordination, disposition and training of staff and like matters are the responsibility of a headquarters division. The general administration of the Buildings Ordinance is undertaken by three divisions covering Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula and immediate hinterland, and the New Territories (including the greater part of New Kowloon). The work associated with dangerous buildings throughout the Colony is undertaken by a fourth, Dangerous Building, division. A chart showing the organization and functions of the Office appears on page 54.

5.03. The Office is represented on the following standing committees:
