increased activity in all sectors of public building, considerable strain has developed in the building industry. Faced with sharply rising prices and labour shortages many building contractors must have suffered badly financially and it is to their credit that, at least in respect of Government contracts, they have honoured their bargains and completed the projects for which they were engaged—albeit in some cases completion was delayed.
11.02. There is no evidence to suggest that any reduction in private building is in sight and expansion of the Public Works Programme continues. So does, unfortunately, the shortage of qualified technical and professional staff referred to in last year's report. In consequence all offices are now working under extreme pressure and I must express my thanks to all my staff for the dedication they have shown in carrying out their duties. In these circumstances it is invidious to select any one office or branch for praise. Nevertheless I wish to make special mention of the members of the P.W.D. Sports Committee and its many Sub-Committees who, in addition to coping with the increased work-load of their normal duties, gave up much of their own time to organize the highly successful Swimming Gala and P.W.D. Sports Day.
