STAFF, TRAINING AND WELFARE
10.96. Mr. M. O'CONNOR joined the office as Business Manager in September. Twenty-five members of the staff who have each served for more than 25 years retired during the year.
Training
10.97. Six apprentice engineers were undergoing training within the office under the Practical Training Scheme of the Institution of Civil Engineers. One assistant chemist underwent twelve months training on attachment to water authorities in the United Kingdom.
10.98. Courses continued throughout the year for newly recruited house service inspection trainees and sixteen trainees satisfactorily completed the course.
10.99. Apprentices continued to be trained within the Waterworks Office under the old Trade Apprenticeship and the new Government Technical and Craft Apprenticeship Schemes.
10.100. Nine trainees from the Buildings Ordinance Office attended lectures on Waterworks house service practice, thirty-four artisans attended four week courses on aspects of water supply and distribution and thirty-two staff from the Mechanical and Electrical Division underwent industrial safety training by the Labour Department.
Welfare
10.101. Assistance was given to a number of officers on matters concerning loans, children's education, housing problems etc., and visits to staff in hospital were made by the Welfare Officer. A cheap bus service was inaugurated for staff travelling between Chai Wan and the Bullock Lane depot.
APPRECIATION
11.01. The general upsurge of activity in private building which became evident towards the end of the last financial year developed during the current year to boom proportions. As this coincided with
