10.71. Procurement of new plant for nine pumping stations at Castle Peak, Cheung Sha Wan, Peninsula, Tai Wan, Ting Kok, Belvedere Tank, Tsuen Wan, Tai O, and Tong Fuk and design work on three pumping stations at Chai Wan, Albany and Bowen Road, and for a surge suppression system at Muk Wu were in hand.
10.72. Water level control and indication equipment was installed at five service reservoirs and the procurement and installation of similar equipment for a further eleven locations was in hand on the Island and Mainland. Desalting
10.73. An experimental desalting plant of 50,000 gallons output per day was installed and commissioned near the 17 milestone, Castle Peak Road to assess the performance in Hong Kong of materials used in evaporators for the manufacture of fresh water and to establish that the location is suitable for a larger permanent plant. An experiment to establish how desalted water can be handled satisfactorily by the existing mains commenced.

10.74. The Unit has the primary responsibility of maintaining the quality of supply within limits recommended by the World Health Organization. This entails close control of the treatment processes at filtration plants to achieve target standards of purity by the most economical means, and the monitoring of water quality by regular sampling throughout the entire supply system.
10.75. Full chemical and bacteriological testing facilities were maintained at two water examination laboratories located on the Mainland and one on Hong Kong Island, while a biological laboratory at Tai Mei Tuk was concerned with limnological and biological studies of Plover Cove Reservoir. A manual of standard laboratory testing methods for training and reference purposes was prepared. The total number of samples examined in all laboratories decreased by 7%
