Major overhauls and repairs are carried out by the main Workshops in Hong Kong or Kowloon, and an experienced P.W.D. Inspector is responsible for the smooth flow of this work.

8.38. The service given to the Armed Forces involves the maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment mainly of electric domestic nature. In order to ensure that each piece of equipment is economically maintained in a safe and serviceable condition a system of Planned Maintenance has been introduced. Prior to 1st January, 1971, most major overhauls were carried out by Depot Staff or Contractors, but main workshops now undertake this, marking a further stage in the policy of fully integrating Military Works.

8.39. During the year, 26,605 routine monthly inspections and routine servicing of kitchen equipment, plant, pressure vessels, air-conditioners, refrigerators and miscellaneous items of equipment took place. A total of 21,455 repairs to all types of domestic equipment were carried out, 5,298 items of new equipment were inspected and tested and 23,992 fault calls attended.

8.40. In 1969, the Establishment Sub-Committee of Finance Committee produced a directive on Apprentices, based on an Ad Hoc Committee's findings, the basis of which was to abolish the existing 'Trade' Apprentice scheme and create two distinct streams to be
