7.19. The move from Central Government Offices to Murray Building created problems in ensuring continuous production—particularly photo-reproduction work but efficient planning combined with willing co-operation and strenuous efforts by all staff reduced delays to a minimum.
Control Survey
7.20. The number of control surveys undertaken during the year increased considerably, particularly traversing, necessitated largely by the increased effort on revision of large scale plans.
7.21. A sustained effort saw the successful completion of the precise re-levelling of Hong Kong Island which now has a sufficient coverage of accurate and stable Bench Marks. A large amount of precise levelling remains to be done in the New Territories but it seems unlikely that this work will commence in the near future as all available staff is committed to more urgent work.
7.22. A special survey to provide control for the proposed Mass Transit system is being undertaken. The first stage was a very precise triangulation survey using a geodetic theodolite, followed by the second stage which consisted of a further breakdown to provide control points at strategic intervals along the Mass Transit routes. The first stage has been successfully completed; the second stage is currently in progress and involves traversing by means of new electronic distance-measuring equipment (DI10) between the stations fixed during Stage I.
7.23. A new Mass Transit Survey section, under the Senior Land Surveyor (Control), has been formed to carry out all surveys in connection with the Mass Transit scheme. This section works in close liaison with Highways Division and one of its most important functions will be to provide accurate co-ordinates and levels of points which are critical to the design and location of the routes. These points, which are being carefully located and referenced (many on roofs of buildings), will be vital for the setting-out of the routes in due course. On completion of the control work, strip-plans at 1/500 scale (in metres) will be prepared by this section for Stage I of the proposed system.
