7.13. The renewed interest in land continued and resulted in an increased demand for proposal plans and title surveys of all types, but the main effort of the survey sections was directed at the problem of keeping up-to-date the large-scale plans of the Colony. For the first time, the average number of survey parties on mapping work—mainly revision of plans—exceeded that on title or cadastral surveys (some 32% were engaged on the former against 28% on the latter).
7.14. The large-scale aerial mapping programme under the original Photogrammetric Survey contract was completed during the year, but at the request of the District Commissioner, New Territories, extra mapping was arranged of a further 79 sheets at 1/1,200 scale, covering areas above the 600 feet contour; the contract was therefore extended for another year.
7.15. Precise surveys for the alignment of several sections of the proposed Mass Transit system have been requested urgently, in connection with preservation of the routes from proposed development which would frustrate the scheme. A geodetic theodolite was purchased to carry out the precise control surveys for this work, some of which had to be undertaken at night to avoid heavy traffic.
7.16. On the cartographic side, the main efforts were in connection with the production of new maps and plans. Compilation of the 1/2,400 scale series of the urban areas is well advanced, and several sheets of the 1/10,000 scale map series produced in the United Kingdom by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys have been revised and converted to dual-language form for publishing locally as a second edition. The first sheet of a new 'Countryside' series covering Hong Kong Island was published and has proved very popular with the public.
7.17. An exhibition of "The Mapping of Hong Kong" was held at the City Hall in February and proved extremely successful. As a result, demand for maps and plans from the public has increased considerably.
7.18. During the year, the Military Survey Branch, FARELF, transferred its base from Singapore to Hong Kong. The Assistant Director of Military Surveys (Lt. Col. M. R. RICHARDS) visited the office, and close liaison is maintained on matters of mutual interest.
