Tsing Yi Typhoon Shelter

240. The three breakwaters forming this shelter between the Islands of Tsing Yi and Nga Ying Chau created a sheltered anchorage for the junks and sampans displaced by the Tsuen Wan reclamation.

TEMPORARY FERRY TERMINALS

241. To relieve the congestion of traffic on the harbour vehicular ferry service, temporary terminals involving dolphins, pontoons and ramps were constructed at the Central Reclamation and at Jordan Road. These were put into use in January and greatly reduced the waiting time of vehicles wishing to cross the harbour. There are now two vehicular services from Hong Kong to Kowloon and vice versa.

DREDGING AND MAINTENANCE

242. Maintenance and repairs under an annual contract were carried out to a number of Government piers and seawalls. This work mainly consisted in repairing fenders, decking, landing steps and handrails.

243. The two departmental dredgers operating on construction works and in clearing drainage outfalls and on deepening the Southern Fairway removed a total of 161,000 cubic yards of material.

244. Port Works divers inspected the underwater sections of private and Government construction works and of existing piers and pipelines. They also removed rocks near Stonecutters Island by underwater blasting and assisted in searching for and recovering the bodies of persons reported drowned in reservoirs and pools. These divers spent a total of 414 hours underwater.

MINOR WORKS

245. Miscellaneous duties included:

(1) The checking of calculations and drawings for various marine structures submitted by private architects,

(2) The repainting of the lighthouse rock at Fan Lau, Lantao Island, the leading mark at the summit of Tong Po Chau (Middle Island), the measured mile beacons in Kowloon Bay and the mooring marks at the Causeway Bay and Yau Ma Tei shelters,

(3) The construction of 15 mooring blocks for the Urban Services Department, 4 for the New Territories Administration and 8 50-ton and 6 40-ton blocks for the Marine Department,
