VEHICLE SECTION
215. There were 1,333 Government vehicles in service against an authorized establishment of 1,454. These consisted of 285 motor cycles, 521 cars and light utility vans and 527 heavy load carrying and special purpose vehicles. 154 new vehicles were received and put into service and 48 which had reached the end of their economical life, were disposed of in accordance with the recommendations of Boards of Survey.
216. Specially designed all-metal motor vehicle bodies constructed on contract included 2 prison vans, 10 general purpose vans and 2 mobile canteens for the Police, 10 meat delivery vans for the Urban Services Department, an X-ray van and a dental van for the Medical and Health Department, and 3 30-cwt. vans for other departments. In addition local firms fabricated metal canopies on 14 3-ton lorries and manufactured 280 hand carts with bins for the collection of refuse.
217. In the workshops direct labour built a further 35 bodies of different types including a mobile post office, a Police dog control van, a film unit and 2 wireless detection vans.
MECHANICAL WORKSHOPS SECTION
218. Of the record number of 42,483 jobs completed in the mechanical workshops some of the more interesting were an electrically operated dumbwaiter for the Castle Peak Hospital, a deep etching table for the Printing Department and 4 sets of steel searchlight supports with remote control mechanisms for the Police Department.
MECHANICAL PLANT SECTION
219. This section maintained most of the engineering plant handling sewage, water and electricity and installed numerous new items. New machines assembled and put into service included a 6-ton shovel/bulldozer, a 5/7-ton platform trailer, an asphalt spreader, an 11-ton and an 8-ton road roller and a 4-ton crawler tractor. Two fully automatic oil fired boilers each rated at 1,270 lbs./hr. together with ancillary calorifiers, autoclaves and sterilizers were installed in Kowloon Hospital Extension.
