SEWERS AND STORMWATER DRAINS

199. The following table lists the works carried out, including main intercepting sewers, stormwater culverts, sewers and stormwater pipes:

Island Kowloon & New Kowloon New Territories Total New drains laid (length in feet) 30,422 68,653 30,149 129,224 Defective drains replaced (length in feet) 5,316 10,414 118 15,848 Connexions provided (Nos.) 1,009 1,333 421 2,763

200. The marked increase in the length of new drains laid in the New Territories was largely due to the rapid development of the new towns of Tsuen Wan and Shek Wu Hui.

RESETTLEMENT (DOMESTIC AND INDUSTRIAL) AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

201. Two bridges, in addition to sewers and stormwater drains, were completed in the Jordan Valley Resettlement Estate. Roads and drains were constructed in Area D of the Wong Tai Sin Resettlement Estate and most of the drainage works finished in the Resettlement Estate at Chai Wan and Tai Wo Hau, Stage I.

202. Drainage works were continued in the internal roads and lanes of the So Uk Housing Estate with the laying of sewers and some branch stormwater drains.

NULLAH DECKING AND RECONSTRUCTION

203. Two nullahs were decked in Kowloon, one in Waterloo Road between the railway bridge and the typhoon shelter and the other in Lok Shan Road between Pau Chung Street and Cheung Ning Street. On the Island the nullah in Shing On Street and a part of the nullah in Stone Nullah Lane were culverted. A portion of Bowrington Canal was decked as a site for a petrol filling station.

204. These works assisted in removing obstacles to the free movement of traffic and reduced the nuisance caused by drainage from unsewered hillside squatter areas.

DISPOSAL WORKS, INTERCEPTING SEWERS AND SCREENING PLANT

205. The collection of sewage in intercepting sewer and conveyance of the final effluent out to sea in underwater pipes has now commenced in seven of the nine drainage districts into which the urban areas of the Colony are divided. In the Yau Ma Tei district a pilot scheme is practically in full operation.
