were for local officers housing co-operatives, two for large low-cost housing schemes, four for workers housing schemes and the remainder for churches combined with schools, and public utilities. Seven pier leases were granted by private treaty.
Lease Renewals
141. Land for Government and Government-sponsored projects
142. The accelerated expansion of the activities of nearly all Government departments, and a continued increase in private and Government-assisted welfare and missionary organizations' projects stimulated by the organization of World Refugee Year, all led to great pressure on the selection of sites for Government and Government-sponsored projects. The selection and subsequent co-ordination of many aspects of the development of these sites took a very prominent place in the work of the sub-department.
Clearances and Resettlement
143. The Lands Division continued to be responsible for co-ordinating all clearances required by the Public Works Department and for subsequent liaison with Resettlement Department. Where clearances involved large industrial establishments or other users which could not be resettled in domestic or flatted factory resettlement blocks, this Division was responsible for clearance. Nineteen applications for summons were made to the Magistrates. In most cases matters did not have to be pursued to the point of a hearing in Court, though six cases were taken before the Magistrates, and clearance orders obtained in each case. Only three of these orders needed to be implemented, as the defendants concerned in the other three cases had completed clearance before the orders made against them came into effect.
