paints, but although the results showed an improvement over ordinary paints, the cost precluded their use on a large scale. Several hundred new traffic signs were fabricated and erected, the majority in connexion with the introduction of Silent Zones in Hong Kong and Kowloon. In addition, portable traffic signs were made and considerable lengths of pedestrian hand railing were erected along the kerbs in the busy shopping districts of Hong Kong and Kowloon. Automatic Road Traffic Signals (3 aspects) with an additional fitting for "filter left” were installed at the following main road intersections in Kowloon which had previously been controlled by traffic police:

(a) Nathan Road and Jordan Road

(b) Nathan Road and Waterloo Road

(c) Nathan Road and Argyle Street

(d) Nathan Road and Prince Edward Road.

Street Lighting

295. The improvement and extension of public street lighting was continued and the total number of lamps, both gas and electric, was increased by 544.

296. The street lighting programme was based, as in previous years, on a priority list compiled by the Commissioner of Police, and every effort was made in its preparation to ensure that the Electricity Companies had adequate time to order the necessary lighting poles and equipment well in advance of the date scheduled in the programme. The improved supply position resulting therefrom is reflected in the table below which shows the number of lights in use during the year compared with the previous years:
