Typhoon and Rainstorm Damage
193. Although rainfall was well above average, no very intense rainstorms occurred and only minor damage was caused.
194. Repairs were carried out to the cutting faces at Sheung Li Uk Housing site and a new length of bund was constructed at Ngau Chi Wan. Channels and catchpits were constructed, and turfing carried out, on an area off Mission Road.
195. As last year, heavy rains fell during September when the Jubilee Reservoir was overflowing, and slight damage was caused to the embankments of the Shing Mun River at Tai Wai. Repairs and further protective works were carried out.
196. Floods were reported from a few areas and steps were taken to prevent recurrence. The areas most affected were Tai Hang Village, King's Road near to Power Street, Caroline Hill Road and Cotton Road.
Private Works
197. The office continued to examine and report on drainage plans for private development. 285 such plans were dealt with during the year. Similarly, drainage reports were made on 194 applications for the lease of land for private development, whilst advice on drainage questions was given to private architects, property owners and to other Government offices.
198. Considerable work was again done on Private Account. Foul sewers, house connexions, storm-water drains, and road gullies were provided for housing estates, notably the Yau Yat Chuen scheme off Boundary Street, the development at North Point, Jardine's Lookout scheme, the development at Percival Street, the Kowloon Tsai scheme, and the Shek Wu Hui development scheme.
199. 1,094 connexions, the highest annual number recorded, were made.
