Page 182. Preparatory work for main sewerage schemes, and arrangements for improved methods of sewage disposal, continued. At the end of the year, proposals for the Yaumati Drainage and Outfall scheme were complete and the first contract was ready for letting. One of the main objects of this scheme is to permit the use of water closets in a densely populated area of 300 acres, where poor outfall arrangements have, up to the present time, necessitated a continuance of the conservancy system. Arrangements were made to intercept sewage from a further area of 900 acres, and to convey the whole flow, after preliminary treatment, to a main off-shore outfall to prevent pollution of the foreshore.
Anti-Malarial Works
183. Repairs and minor extensions to anti-malarial channels were carried out as and where necessary. In addition, the first sizeable post-war scheme for the training of stream courses with anti-malarial channels was commenced in the Kowloon foothills north of Cornwall Road, Kowloon Tong.
Storm-Water Drainage
184. The smell nuisance from nullahs draining areas which have been developed illegally, and which are not yet sewered, continued spasmodically. This nuisance, and a similar one from the harbour foreshores at low tide, are most noticeable during hot, dry periods when there is little rain to flush the nullahs, and the restriction of water supplies reduces the quantity of water in the foul sewers.
185. Removal of silt from the nullahs and catchpits was carried out as necessary. Clean sand, suitable for sale by the Sand Monopoly for building purposes, was removed in addition to offensive material.
186. The policy of culverting or decking open nullahs continued, and during the year the following nullahs were dealt with: - Boundary Street, east of the railway; Sing Wo Road,
