235. Service Reservoirs. All service Reservoirs were cleaned and examined during the winter months and were found to be in order with the exception of that at Eastern. Here inner faces of the walls, the invert and the columns supporting the roof were found to have suffered extensive deterioration. Repairs were effected to the columns and investigations were in hand with a view to repairing the walls and invert during the next dry season. Weir Recorders were installed at Kowloon Tsai and Piper's Hill.
236. Jubilee Reservoir. There are 4 draw-off points in this reservoir each of which is provided with 2 valves. For some considerable time the upstream valve of the 4th and lowest intake had been leaking and to effect repairs a sealing cap was placed temporarily over the intake pipe by divers. The defective valve was then removed and overhauled—work being almost completed by the end of the year. All pipes, valves, capstans, expansion joints etc. were overhauled, scraped and painted.
237. 36" Steel Main—Shing Mun.
Pending the delivery of a 36" valve for the supply main to control the rate of flow arrangements were made for the temporary installation of an available 48″ valve to reduce the vibrations set up in the valve tower standpipe by trapped air whenever the rate of flow was varied.
238. Shing Mun Catchwater. During the night of 22nd September approximately 8″ of rain fell in 5 hours. As a result of this a heavy boulder was dislodged from the hillside and caused a break in the catchwater at chainage 13,700 feet. Approximately 250 ft. of the catchwater collapsed and heavy erosion of the hillside took place. A very large quantity of boulders and debris was washed down into an area north of Tsun Wan and many dwelling places were destroyed causing fatalities.
239. As a temporary expedient 18" pipes were laid through the dams and a temporary wooden flume erected across the breach in the catchwater to enable the valuable dry weather flow to be taken to Jubilee Reservoir. Very little of the dry weather flow was lost.
