231. A total of 1,542 orders were dealt with during the year of which 1,346 were for Waterworks jobs.
232. In the meter repair workshops, 26,816 meters were overhauled and tested and a further 8,339 were repaired on site, making a total of 35,155 repairs. This represents 95% of the total meters installed and is an increase of 71% on the number of meters overhauled during the previous year.
233. The appointment of a Mechanical Engineer in late 1951 has enabled the maintenance of the diesel engines to be carried out by Waterworks staff during the year under review.
Renewals and Improvements.
234. Mainlaying. The severe restrictions of the 1951/52 winter revealed many areas where the distribution mains were under-sized and unable to cope with the high rate of draw off. Advantage was taken of this information and the replacing of under-sized mains was mainly confined to such districts. The total length of piping laid during the year amounted to 192,020 ft. The more important mains laid were as follows:——
Queen's Road East between Garden Road and Hennessey Road—In conjunction with the complete construction of this length of road the inadequate 10" main on the south side was replaced with a 15" pipe and the 12″ main on the north side was re-aligned.
Connaught Road. 3,000 ft. of 18″ main was laid during the re-construction of a portion of Connaught Road near the Vehicular Ferry Pier.
Kui Kiang Street. A 12" main was laid in this road between Cheung Sha Wan Road and Lai Chi Kok Road to assist in raising pressures in the Shamshuipo area.
