Traffic Control.

208. A squad of 22 painters was kept fully employed throughout the year working on street signs, road centre lines, and car park areas, whilst the erection of new and the re-erection of damaged traffic signs was carried out by the sub-department at the request of the Traffic Branch of the Police Department. As a general guide to the extent of this work, 2,211 gallons of paint were used and 495 traffic signs were erected or replaced.

Further progress was made in the rehabilitation and extension of public street lighting but the difficulty in the supply position of electric cable and fittings considerably curtailed the programme. At the beginning of the year two priority lists were compiled by the Commissioner of Police which gave in order of importance, streets in Hong Kong and Kowloon that he considered were insufficiently lighted or with no lights at all. These lists comprised the main basis of the street lighting programme for 1952/53 and steady progress was made as indicated in the table below:

This work involved the excavation of terraces in the hillside, the provision of access steps, footpaths and all surface water drainage channels.
