CORRUPTION INVOLVING MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
96. 12 allegations of corruption against members of the public were dealt with during the year. In one case no further action was taken as there was insufficient information upon which to base an enquiry, and one case is still under preliminary enquiry. Six cases were referred to the Target Committee on Corruption, and a further four cases are awaiting the next meeting of the Committee. Of the six cases considered by the Target Committee, two were referred to the Anti-Corruption Branch for further investigation. Both of these cases were found to be unsubstantiated. Of the remainder, the Target Committee directed in respect of one case that no further action be taken and in respect of three that they be referred to other police formations for action.
97. Investigations into allegations against members of Government departments resulted in nine members of the public being taken before the courts, as a result of which eight were convicted and one was acquitted.
98. Cases dealt with by Anti-Corruption Branch during the year 1967-68 were slightly less than those dealt with in 1966-67. This is not considered to be attributable to a reduction in the incidence of corrupt practices but rather to the dislocation of the work of the Branch dealing with corruption caused by the 1967 disturbances.
