of persons help in detention was reduced to one, and of the five referred to the Tribunal during the year three were released on Police supervision and two were under detention pending a decision in their case. Four British subjects and 17 aliens were deported during the year.

127. There were 251 new Police Supervision Orders issued during the year, a decrease of 78 compared with the previous year. This brings to 10,883 the total number of orders issued since the inception of the system in 1956. Of the current total of 980 supervisees, 376 had previously served prison sentences. The Police Supervision Section has maintained its contacts with the various voluntary agencies interested in discharged prisoners and at the end of the year 11 supervisees were under the care of the Hong Kong Discharged Prisoners Aid Society.

128. 2,763 investigations were made into the character and back- ground of applicants for the Police Force, a decrease of 479 compared with last year. The continuing success of the Police recruiting campaign. made it necessary to extend the retention of additional staff to process the large number of applications.

129. The Interpol Sub-Bureau continues to maintain a liaison with all member countries on international crime and criminals. During the year a large number of enquiries from other countries were dealt with and several investigations carried out.

130. The Drug Disposal Unit destroyed 13,494 items compared with 12,547 the previous year. A total of over 10,000 lbs. of opium, 60 lbs. of heroin, 135 lbs. of barbitone and 590 lbs. of morphine were burned. An interesting feature was the burning of a very large quantity of drugs in the new Government incinerator at Kennedy Town. This was attended by community leaders and received good publicity in the local press.

AIDS TO INVESTIGATION SECTIONS

131. The sections described below are at Police Headquarters, Arsenal Street, and come under the direct control of C.I.D. Headquarters.

Identification Bureau

132. This bureau consists of four sections, the fingerprint records section, the scene of crime section, the photographic section and the document examination section.

133. During the year 52,214 finger print forms were received at the Bureau for examination, a decrease of 1,442 compared with the previous
